How Your Policy Can Work for You Right Now

When most people think about life insurance, they picture one thing: a check that goes to their loved ones after they're gone. And that is the main job of a life insurance policy—delivering a meaningful cash benefit to your beneficiaries when you pass away.

Here's what a lot of people don't realize: today's life insurance policies can potentially have even more flexible benefits than that. Depending on your insurance company and the type of policy you own, your coverage can become a financial asset that helps you and your family reach all kinds of goals while you're still alive. These are called

, and they're important to understand.

Let's look at what your policy might be able to do for you.

policy (as opposed to term insurance, which expires), part of what you pay into that policy builds up over time as cash value.

The nice part is that this growth is generally tax-deferred, meaning you don't owe taxes on the gains as long as they stay inside the policy. It works something like a retirement account in that sense—your money grows without the drag of annual taxes.

Over the years, that cash value can become substantial. And unlike most retirement accounts, there's no strict age requirement to access it. That flexibility is what makes it such a useful tool.

Borrowing: Easy Access to Cash When You Need It

Here's a benefit people tend to love once they understand it. You can borrow against your policy, up to its cash value, at a relatively low interest rate—without a credit check, income verification, or lengthy approval process.

The loan doesn't have a fixed repayment schedule, either. You can repay it on your own terms. Interest accumulates on what you borrow, but there's no outside lender pressuring you for monthly payments.

If you're wondering what happens if you never repay it: the outstanding loan balance plus interest is simply deducted from the death benefit when you pass away. Your beneficiaries receive a smaller payout, which is crucial to understand before borrowing. You would only want to consider this option if you are confident in your ability to repay it.

This kind of access—on your schedule, without credit scrutiny—can be valuable in situations like covering a medical expense, bridging a gap in income, or funding a major purchase.

Cash Value: Withdrawals (What You Should Know First)

A withdrawal is exactly what it sounds like: you take money directly out of the cash value and keep it. You simply request it from your insurance company. There's no application or approval process like a loan, because it's your own money. People use withdrawals for all kinds of things: covering an unexpected expense, supplementing income, or freeing up cash for another goal.

A few things are helpful to understand before you do it:

Up to what you've paid in, it's usually tax-free.

The total of the premiums you've contributed is called your "basis." You can generally withdraw up to that amount without owing taxes, because the government treats it as getting your own money back. Pull out more than your basis, and the gains on top are typically taxable.

           A withdrawal is permanent.

Unlike a loan against the policy (which you can repay to restore your cash value), money you withdraw is gone from the policy for good.

It usually shrinks your death benefit.

Taking cash out generally reduces the amount your beneficiaries will eventually receive, often dollar-for-dollar. It's a literal trade-off to be weighed.

Dividends: Your Share of the Profits

Certain types of permanent life insurance—particularly whole life policies from mutual insurance companies—pay dividends. Think of it as your share of the company's profits, returned to you as a policyholder.

When dividends are paid, you typically have several options for what to do with them:

Use them to reduce your premium payments

Let them accumulate inside the policy (earning interest)

Purchase additional paid-up coverage, which grows your death benefit and cash value

           Withdraw them as cash

The tax treatment is friendly: dividends you withdraw are tax-free, because the government treats them as a return of premiums you already paid.

One honest caveat: dividends aren't guaranteed. Many companies have paid them every single year for generations, but insurers can have an off year. If that happens, a dividend may not come through.

Trading Your Policy for Guaranteed Income

Many people buy life insurance when they're young and raising a family, then reach a stage where they simply don't need the coverage anymore. What they do want is steady, guaranteed income.

The tax code has you covered here. Under Section 1035 of the Internal Revenue Code, you can exchange your permanent life insurance policy for an annuity without triggering capital gains or income taxes on the swap. The same rule lets you exchange one life insurance policy for a different one, tax-free.

It's a way to repurpose an asset you no longer need into one that fits your life today—without a tax bill along the way.

A Flexible Supplement to Your Retirement Income

Some permanent policies can serve as an additional retirement income tool—sometimes called life insurance retirement plans, or LIRPs. Here's how it works in practice:

You contribute to a specially structured policy over your working years, letting the cash value accumulate on a tax-deferred basis. In retirement, you pull money out through policy loans rather than withdrawals. Because loans aren't taxable income, you can create a stream of income that doesn't show up on your tax return—potentially lowering your tax bracket and avoiding triggers like higher Medicare premiums or taxation of Social Security benefits.

This strategy works best when the policy is designed correctly from the start and funded consistently. It's not for everyone, but for people who have maxed out other tax-advantaged accounts, it can be worth exploring.

One thing to note: for the tax advantages to hold, the policy generally can't lapse. Keeping it in force is important, and working with a knowledgeable advisor is essential. The income you generate must come from loans or dividend withdrawals, as covered earlier.

          The Bottom Line

Life insurance is, first and foremost, protection for the people you love after you are gone. But a permanent policy can also be a living, working asset—one that builds value, offers easy access to cash, adapts as your needs change, and even helps fund your retirement.

Whether your policy includes all of these features depends on your insurer and the type of coverage you own, so it's worth sitting down with a life insurance professional to understand exactly how permanent life insurance can work for you.

          Note:

Smart home tech can make daily life at home easier and safer. For older adults, the right devices help with everyday t

asks and give family members peace of mind. Here is a look at the devices that help most, plus a clear answer on what Medicare may or may not pay for.

Robot Vacuums Can Support Your Health, Not Just Your Floors

Clutter and dust on the floor raise the risk of trips and falls. A robot vacuum handles this without bending or hauling a heavy machine.

It clears dust, crumbs, and pet hair on a schedule, so floors stay clear of slip hazards.

It cuts down on bending and twisting, which can be hard on the back, hips, and knees.

You can start it with a voice command or a phone app, so it can be managed from anywhere.

          Honest note:

A robot vacuum will not deep clean or handle stairs. Think of it as steady upkeep between bigger cleanings.

When shopping for this kind of device, search phrases like

“self-emptying robot vacuum” or “robot vacuum with voice control”.

Smart Lighting and Motion-Sensor Night Lights

Good lighting is one of the simplest ways to prevent falls. Falls are the top cause of injury for older adults, and the risk goes up in low light because aging eyes adjust to the dark more slowly.

Motion-sensor lights and night lights turn on by themselves when you move, so you can see your path without reaching for a switch. Place them along the route from the bed to the bathroom, near the toilet, in hallways, and on stairs. Most are cheap, stick on or plug in, and need no real setup.

When shopping for this kind of device, search phrases like

“motion-sensor night light,” “stick-on LED night light,” or “plug-in motion sensor hallway light.”

Fall Monitors and Medical Alert Systems

A fall is one of the biggest safety concerns for older adults. A medical alert system, also called a personal emergency response system (PERS), can call for help quickly. There are multiple types of PERS, but the most common options are:

A wearable button, worn as a pendant or wristband, that you press to call for help.

Automatic fall detection that senses a hard fall and calls for help on its own.

Two-way voice devices so you can talk with a responder right away.

Some newer options are built into smartwatches and can track heart rate and daily activity, too.

“medical alert system with fall detection,” “personal emergency response system,” or “medical alert smartwatch.”

Smart Devices That Remind You About Medications and Appointments

Missing a dose of medication or an appointment is common, and it can negatively affect your health. A few tools help you stay on track.

Smart speakers like Amazon Alexa or Google Nest.

You can set spoken reminders for pills, refills, and appointments just by asking.

           Automatic pill dispensers.

These stay locked until it is time for a dose, then beep or light up. Some alert a family member if you miss one.

           Phone or smartwatch alerts.

Reminder apps can ping you and a caregiver at the same time when it is time to take a medication or get ready for an appointment.

Pick what fits how you live. If you take several medications, a locking dispenser adds a layer of safety.

When shopping for this kind of device, search phrases like

“automatic pill dispenser,” “locking pill dispenser with alarm,” or “medication reminder app.”

          Stove Shut-Off and Fire Prevention

This one matters, especially if memory loss is a concern. Unattended cooking is the number one cause of home fires in the U.S. A stove shut-off device adds a safety net.

Some devices, like FireAvert, sync to your smoke detector and cut power to the stove when the alarm sounds. They install in under 10 minutes with no tools. Others, like iGuard, shut off the stove when no one is in the kitchen, add a gas sensor on the gas model, and alert family through a phone app.

When shopping for this kind of device, search phrases like

“automatic stove shut-off device,” “stove fire prevention for seniors,” or “gas stove auto shut-off.”

What Medicare Covers, and What It Does Not

This is where people get confused, so here is the straight answer: Medicare coverage for these types of devices is not extensive, and it depends on the type of Medicare you have.

          Original Medicare and Medicare Supplement.

Original Medicare and Medicare Supplement plans do not cover medical alert systems, fall monitors, smart lighting, robot vacuums, or reminder gadgets. They can cover certain doctor-ordered durable medical equipment for home use, such as walkers, wheelchairs, and hospital beds, but the items discussed in this article are not covered. Original Medicare and Medicare Supplement do cover a balance exam to check your fall risk when your doctor orders one.

          Medicare Advantage (Part C).

Some Medicare Advantage plans may offer extra benefits that Original Medicare does not, such as an over-the-counter allowance or help with the cost of a medical alert system. This varies a lot by plan and location, and a plan may cover only part of the cost. If a benefit like this matters to you, check the specific plan’s details before you enroll. Plan benefits and rules can change each year.

How to Choose What Is Right for You

Start with your biggest worry. If falls are the concern, better lighting and a medical alert system are good first steps. If managing prescriptions is hard, a pill dispenser may matter most. You do not need every gadget. One or two that fit your routine can make a real difference.

Paying for health care on a fixed income is hard. Even with Medicare, the premiums, deductibles, drug costs, and copays add up fast.

Here's the good news. Several federal and state programs help people with Medicare cover these costs. The problem is that many people who qualify never apply. Some don't know the programs exist. Others assume they earn too much. That assumption can cost them real money.

The programs below can lower your premiums, cut your drug costs, and help you avoid gaps in care. It's worth a few minutes to see what you might qualify for.

How Medicare and Medicaid Work Together

Medicare is the federal health insurance program for people 65 and older, plus some younger people who have disabilities.

Medicaid is a joint federal and state program for people with limited income and resources.

Some people qualify for both. They're called "dual eligibles." If you have both, Medicare pays first for the services it can cover. Medicaid may help with your Medicare premiums, deductibles, and copays, along with some services Medicare doesn't cover, like long-term care.

Many dual eligibles join a special kind of Medicare Advantage plan called a Dual Eligible Special Needs Plan (D-SNP). These plans coordinate your Medicare and Medicaid benefits in one place.

Eligibility rules vary by state. To find out if you qualify, contact your state Medicaid office or your local State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP).

          Medicare Savings Programs

If you are enrolled in Medicaid, you may be eligible for one of the Medicare Savings Programs, which are some of the most valuable forms of help and are often overlooked. These state-run programs help pay some or all of your Medicare Part A and Part B costs if your income and resources are limited.

          There are four programs:

Qualified Medicare Beneficiary (QMB) offers the most help. It can cover your Part A and Part B premiums, deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments. If you're in QMB, providers generally can't bill you for services Medicare covers. If you get a bill anyway, tell the provider you're in the QMB program. Additionally, if you are an eligible QMB and qualify for full Medicaid benefits, you may benefit from the QMB+ program, in which Medicaid covers services not covered by Medicare, such as long-term nursing home care or personal care services.

Specified Low-Income Medicare Beneficiary (SLMB) helps pay your Part B premium. It's for people whose income is a little above the QMB limit.

Qualifying Individual (QI) also helps pay your Part B premium. Funding is limited each year and goes out first-come, first-served, so apply early.

Qualified Disabled and Working Individual (QDWI) helps pay the Part A premium for certain people with disabilities who went back to work.

Income and resource limits for these program vary by state. If you qualify for #1 - #3 above, you automatically qualify for Extra Help with your drug costs.

          Extra Help With Prescription Drugs

Extra Help (also known as the Low-Income Subsidy, or LIS) lowers or eliminates what you pay for Medicare drug coverage (Part D). That includes your premium, deductible, and the cost of each prescription.

You qualify automatically if you already have any of these:

           Full Medicaid coverage

           Supplemental Security Income (SSI)

           A Medicare Savings Program

If you are not enrolled in any of those three programs, you must meet income and asset limits to qualify (per the Social Security Administration):

For individuals in 2026, the annual income limit is $23,475 and the resource limit is $18,090.

For married couples in 2026, the annual income limit is $31,725 and the resource limit is $36,100.

Income includes wages, alimony, annuities, self-employment income, pensions, rental income, Social Security benefits, veterans benefits, and worker’s compensation. It doesn’t include assistance from others to pay for household expenses, disaster assistance, earned income tax credit payments, home energy assistance, housing assistance, medical treatment and drugs, scholarships and education grants, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, or victim compensation payments.

Resources include money in bank accounts, stocks, bonds, and retirement accounts. They don't include your home, one car, up to $1,500 for burial costs, a burial plot, or personal belongings. Limits can change each year, so check the current numbers on Medicare.gov before you apply.

The savings from Extra Help can add up. In 2026, people with Extra Help pay no monthly premium and no deductible for their drug plan. They pay no more than $5.10 for each generic drug and $12.65 for each brand-name drug. Once their out-of-pocket drug costs reach $2,100 for the year, they pay nothing more for covered drugs.

If you are not enrolled automatically, you can apply any time at SSA.gov/medicare/part-d-extra-help. When you apply, Social Security can start a Medicare Savings Program application for you at the same time.

One more thing worth knowing. Even if you don't qualify for Extra Help, the $2,100 yearly cap on out-of-pocket Part D drug costs applies to everyone with a drug plan in 2026.

          State Pharmaceutical Assistance Programs

Some states run their own State Pharmaceutical Assistance Programs (SPAPs). These help residents pay for prescriptions, Part D premiums, or other drug costs.

Programs differ a lot from state to state. Some give direct financial help. Others help you coordinate benefits with your Part D plan. Not every state has one. To find out, ask your local SHIP or visit go.Medicare.gov/spap.

          Help With Long-Term Care

Here's something that surprises a lot of people. Medicare generally does not pay for long-term custodial care, like an extended nursing home stay. Medicaid is the main payer for those services.

Depending on your state and your finances, Medicaid may help cover:

           Nursing home care

           Community-based long-term care

Medicaid long-term care rules are complex. Many families get help from an elder law attorney, a Medicaid planner, or their local Area Agency on Aging before they apply.

Simple Safety Tips to Help Protect Your Family, Friends, and Property During Your Fourth of July Festivities

Fourth of July is one of America's favorite holidays and

it's a time to enjoy Independence Day with your family and friends.

Unfortunately, every year more than 11,000 people are sent to the emergency room for fireworks-related injuries, and in a typical year about eight to 10 people are killed by fireworks.

On top of that, fourth of July fireworks start an average of 18,500 fires every year, including 1,300 structure fires, 300 vehicle fires, and 16,900 outside fires, according to the National Fire Protection Association.

But you can take steps to protect your family and your property so that you don't have to be one of those statistics. It all comes down to common sense and respecting the power of the fireworks.

          Mind the Sparklers

Usually these are known as "kiddie" fireworks, but you may be surprised to know that they cause one-quarter of the house fires and emergency room fireworks injuries on Fourth of July.

Sparklers are best handled by people aged 12 and older. Children younger than 12 require extreme supervision.

Everyone handling sparklers should wear closed-toe shoes, and not flip-flops or sandals, to protect their feet from sparks.

Keep a bucket of water to place sparklers in after they finish sparkling; they are still hot and dangerous.

          Adult Supervision

Always have an adult vigilantly supervise fireworks activities and never allow children to play with or ignite fireworks.

Keep a Safe Distance from Your Home

If you are going to use fireworks at home, be sure you're lighting them in a safe area. A “safe area” means away from homes, buildings, trees, and bushes.

If your gutters have accumulated leaves, pine needles, or other flammable material, clean them before using fireworks near your home. If you're leaving town for the holiday, ask a neighbor to keep an eye on your house.

          Be Prepared for the Worst

If you set off fireworks, keep a bucket of water handy in case of malfunction or fire. A fire extinguisher should be kept nearby in case of an emergency, especially if you are lighting fireworks on your street.

          Follow Instructions

Always follow instructions for lighting fireworks. If fireworks malfunction, don't relight them! Douse and soak them with water, then throw them away. Also, never ignite fireworks in a container, especially one that is glass or metal.

          Stay Away from Others

Don't aim fireworks at other people. They can cause severe injury.

By taking a few simple precautions and using common sense, you can enjoy a fun, memorable, and safe Fourth of July while helping protect your loved ones, your neighbors, and your property.

analyzed data from over 451,000 individuals across 10 European countries over a 16-year period. The findings revealed that consuming two or more 250 ml glasses of soft drinks daily—whether sugar-sweetened or artificially sweetened—was associated with a higher risk of all-cause mortality compared to those who drank less than one glass per month.

involving 13,440 U.S. adults aged 45 and older found that each additional 12-ounce serving of sugary beverages, including 100% fruit juice, was linked to an 11% higher risk of all-cause mortality. Specifically, each additional 12-ounce serving of fruit juice was associated with a 24% increased risk. Watch the sugar content of iced coffee beverages and alcoholic cocktails as well.

It's essential to note that high soft drink consumption often correlates with other unhealthy lifestyle choices. The IARC study observed that individuals who drank more soft drinks typically had higher body mass indexes and were more likely to smoke. Even after adjusting for factors like diet, physical activity, smoking, and education, the association between soft drink consumption and increased mortality risk remained significant.

7 Healthy Travel Tips

Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway or a long-awaited international adventure, setting off on a trip is always exciting—but can also be unpredictable. That’s why preparing for the unexpected, especially when it comes to your health, is essential. Knowing what your medical coverage includes (and doesn’t) while traveling can help you stay healthy, avoid costly surprises, and soak up the unforgettable moments on your journey.

Let’s walk through some proactive steps you can take before packing your bags—from vaccinations and insurance to emergency planning and fraud protection.

          1. Know What Your Health Plan Covers—And Where

Medical surprises aren’t on anyone’s itinerary—but it’s best to be prepared. Start by knowing how your insurance policy covers (or doesn’t) the region you’re traveling to.

          Individual health policyholders,

review your insurer’s network coverage. Some plans only cover in-network or state-specific services, while others offer broader emergency coverage or travel-specific riders. Consult your insurance agent to get help reviewing your policy.

          Medicare beneficiaries,

Original Medicare (Parts A & B) typically doesn’t cover medical care outside the U.S., except in limited circumstances. If you have a Medicare Advantage Plan, it may include emergency and urgent coverage abroad, but this varies by provider. Check your plan’s

          Evidence of Coverage

or speak to your plan representative before traveling.

          2. Consider Supplemental Insurance

If you're a frequent traveler or heading abroad, look into some options to help cover you. Some options include:

           Travel Medical Insurance

: Plans offer emergency coverage during trips outside the U.S. and tend to be affordable.

           Evacuation Insurance

: This covers transport to a qualified medical facility if the nearest care is inadequate. An evacuation clause is often, but not always, included in a travel insurance plan.

           Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap)

: Some Medigap policies cover emergency care abroad, typically up to plan limits and with a deductible.

           Critical Illness Insurance

: A lump-sum payout can provide financial flexibility in case you’re diagnosed with a covered condition like a heart attack or stroke during travel.

Be sure to read the fine print—some policies require you to be under a certain age, and preexisting conditions may not be covered. Your licensed insurance agent can help talk you through your options.

          3. Keep Your Medical Info Handy

Consider using a secure health app or digital wallet to access all your health records quickly. But just in case your phone is inaccessible, bring physical copies of these important documents as well:

           Your insurance or Medicare cards

Emergency contact numbers (include the country code +1 if you’re traveling abroad)

           A medication list with dosages

           Allergy and medical condition alerts

Pack all essential paperwork together in a waterproof sleeve in your luggage, and leave a second copy with someone back home.

          4. Schedule Preventive Care Before Departure

Most insurance plans cover preventive care services like wellness visits, vaccinations, and screenings. Before your trip, check these tasks off your list:

          Get vaccinated

: Make sure you’re up to date on your flu, COVID-19, and tetanus shots. If traveling internationally, check the CDC recommendations for the region you’re visiting, which may include Hepatitis A/B, typhoid, or yellow fever vaccinations.

Scammers Are Targeting Grandparents—Here’s How to Stay One Step Ahead

Imagine getting a call in the middle of the night from someone claiming to be your grandchild, panicked and in trouble. They say they’ve been in an accident or arrested—and they desperately need money. Your heart races. You’d do anything to help. That’s exactly what scammers are counting on.

—a sneaky and heartless scheme targeting older adults with urgent, emotional phone calls meant to trick them into sending money.

          What Is the Grandparent Scam?

These scams usually start with a phone call from someone pretending to be your grandchild (or another close relative). They’ll say they’re in trouble—maybe stuck in jail or in a hospital—and they need money fast for bail, legal fees, or emergency expenses.

To make things even more convincing, they may hand the phone off to someone pretending to be a lawyer or a police officer. And they’ll likely ask you

          not

to tell anyone—saying it’s a “private” or “sensitive” situation.

That sense of urgency is key to the scam. It’s meant to bypass your instinct to double-check and make you act fast—before you have time to think it through or talk to someone else.

Why It Works—and Why It’s Dangerous

These calls often come late at night or early in the morning, when you’re more likely to be caught off guard. The scammer might not even say who they are—just “Grandma, it’s me”—and hope you fill in the blank for them. From there, they use that information to sound more convincing.
